I simply adore animation. I think it's a fantastic way to narrate a story. But what happens if the story itself isn't a good one to tell. That's exactly what has happened to Surf's Up. The story is based on a penguin wanting to be a surfer. And how he enters the world championship and ends up winning. The underlying moral is never to give up.
Cody, a surfer penguin has an oversized head and a yearning to be a winner. His idol is Big Z and he enters the competition to compete with TANK the mean, arrogant and damn good surfer at that. Big Z had an accident and he lost to Tank 9 years back and there's no looking back for Tank from there on.He's been winning the memorial cup for the last 9 times and he knows he is the best ! Chicken Joe is Cody's only friend on the beach and it seems that everyone only looks upto Tank as the best surfer in the world. Eventually Tank, Cody and Joe battle it out for the trophy and all hell breaks loose.
The animation is lovely and so are the characters and surroundings. Lot of 3D modeling to give the waves a very realistic look. The water looks lovely. But the storyline falls short of expectation. Unlike animations like Cars or Finding Nemo, where even a weak story was made fantastic because of the main lead as well as other characters, I found no particular character to fall in love with. The dialogues were soggy and slow. Not my favorite Animation even on a rainy day !
