We all remember the very famous helmet ad that used to air on DD. I am not sure if they still air it. The one with the coconut and the helmet. The caption line used to be in Hindi, “marzi hai aapki, aakhir sir hai aapka”. To the agony of many of us, wearing helmets is being made compulsory for two wheeler riders in Pune.
Everyone one of you has an argument ready for proving why it should not made compulsory or why should it be made compulsory. We are not going to give you anymore arguments. Instead we are going to get some facts and let you do decide. - Out of the 784 head injuries treated in 2004, 368 had serious head injuries and 58 per cent patients of the total 784 were on two-wheelers and not wearing a helmet.
- Every other tissue in the body rejuvenates itself except the brain tissue. What that means is that the brain tissue does not regenerate itself and due to which the treatment of the head injury is very critical and of course expensive.
- Neurosurgeons and ortho surgeons from leading hospitals in the city reiterate that there is certainly a relation between head injuries and not wearing helmets and it is proved beyond doubt that, if the helmet is on, there are great chances of the accident victim getting away with minor injuries.
- The expenses of head injury treatment. Doctors say that, each day the minimum expenditure is Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000. And since the recovery is long and complicated, patients lie around the ICU for weeks on end. The bill runs into several lakhs in very serious cases. In fact just one major operation of the brain costs Rs 50,000 or more.
- The brain functions by inter-relating its component parts and uses a network of neuron cells to send “messages” to all parts of the body. An injury to one part of the brain disrupts the “message system” and activity associated with that part of the brain is no longer connected to the message network. This interruption of activity, at any particular step, reveals problems associated with the injury. Everyone has a unique set of neurons transmitting these messages, therefore every injury has a unique set of associated problems.
- Head is the CPU of human body. So head injury, depending on which part of the head is affected, can cause major problems to normal functionality of your body and thereby causing a setback in your fast and furious life.
Now that we have the facts, it is us who have to make the decision. So, while the debates continue for making the helmet compulsory or not, let us do the right thing. Because at the end of the day, “marzi hai aapki, aakhir sir hai aapka”. |
